Welcome to Year 1!

This year all children will begin to develop their independence, sense of responsibility and self-confidence. As they navigate an enriching curriculum, sparking their curiosity and imagination through a balance of play-based and hands on learning.

Spring Term

DT

In our DT unit, the children designed and produced their own puppets, carefully selecting materials and thinking about how their puppets would move and function. Once finished, they used their puppets to create and tell imaginative stories, combining design skills with creativity, communication, and lots of fun.

Autumn Term

Writing

In our writing unit, the children explored the story Beegu, a small alien who crash-lands on Earth. Beegu even “visited” our classroom, where the children eagerly helped him by creating missing posters to help his mum find him. Inspired by his adventure, the children planned and wrote their own imaginative stories, developing their storytelling skills while showing creativity and excitement for writing.

History
In our history unit, the children learned about Neil Armstrong and his historic space mission, exploring what it takes to travel into space. Inspired by his journey, they designed and created their own rockets.

Science

In our science unit on seasonal changes, the children went on a learning walk to observe changes in the local environment, noticing differences in weather, plants, and trees and developing their observation skills.

We place a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure in our classroom, with regular time set aside for children to enjoy books of their own choice. Through shared stories and cosy reading spaces; children develop a love of reading, build confidence, and discover the joy of getting lost in a good book.
